Minnetonka School Board Approves 2026 Legislative Position Statements

During its meeting on March 5, the Minnetonka School Board approved the Minnetonka Public School District’s annual legislative position statements. These statements are used by the District’s Community Action for Student Education (CASE) Committee to support community members in advocating with state leaders about support for Minnesota’s schools.

The Board reviewed the drafted 2026 Legislative Position Statements document at its November study session, its December regular meeting, and its February study session before approving the document in March.

The 2026 statements focus on the need for the State Legislature to provide sufficient funding for key funding formulas that are the backbone of programmatic stability for the District, Superintendent David Law explained during the meeting. He also noted that this year, some interest areas were added to the legislative position statements, to be monitored based on community feedback, Board goals and priorities of the Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD), of which Minnetonka Schools is a member district.

If Minnetonka Schools is not successful at the Legislature this year in getting funding changes approved, such as an increase to the Operating Referendum cap or Local Optional Revenue cap, the District must then rely on the limited funding increases available annually from the State of Minnesota. Success in the 2026 Legislature in getting these initiatives enacted into law is critically important to maintaining the exemplary and innovative programs the District is currently offering its students.

During the March discussion, School Board Vice Chair Dan Olson encouraged community members to reach out to their legislators so that lawmakers can understand schools’ needs and put education front and center.

School Board Director Karen Jordan agreed and said she encouraged school community members to join the CASE committee to advocate for school funding. Learn more about CASE and sign up to get involved.
